DENR asks Misor to review log ban proposal

SOME 42,446 individuals who depends on forestry-related livelihood will be affected by the proposed log ban in Misamis Oriental.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in region 10, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the MisOr needs to conduct a comprehensive study on the economic, social and environmental impact of the proposed log ban in the province.

One of the consequences cited is that it will close the door for forestry investment which ultimately results to the importation of raw materials in order to sustain the operation of wood processing plants in this province.

Furthermore, the proposed log ban should not be viewed as a solution to prevent floods in the area since flooding can also be attributed to the volume of rainfall. If the soil becomes too saturated, it will still lead to an overflow of the stream channels thereby causing flash floods.

However, DENR in Northern Mindanao assures that it will fully abide by the decision of the legislators and will remain strong in their commitment to pursue their mandate in promoting sustainable development for the country. a report from henry d. daquipel
